6 Torrent clients for Linux

By

Bit torrent

Introduction

When people talk about BitTorrent probably thinks to download movies and music, often illegally and without permission of the copyright. But there is also a legitimate and legal torrenting you can do, especially on Linux.Forexample, most Linux distributions are available through the same ISO images via BitTorrent.

Having a good BitTorrent client is imperative if you are a Linux user, what is the right one depends on what you do and how you plan to use the sources. With this in mind let's look at some of the best BitTorrent client available for Linux.

Transmission on Linux

Transmission

One of the most common torrent client platform, you will find it on Linux and Mac OSX,and has a native interface for Qt, GTK+, the command line and web interface. But wait, there's more! Transmission also has a lot of third-party tool sthat work and interact with the program, including Transdroid-a remote client for Android through which control the transmission from the phone. Most Linux distributions have support for the package of transmission.

Transmission is designed for easy, powerful use. It has set the defaults to Just Work and it only takes a few clicks to configure advanced features like watch directories, bad peer block lists, and the web interface. When Ubuntu chose Transmission as its default BitTorrent client, one of the most-cited reasons was its easy learning curve.

Download torrents on Ubuntu with Ktorrent

Ktorrent

For fans of KDE there is Ktorrent a torrent client complete and integrated deeply with the KDE platform. Ktorrent has support for UTP,super-seeding, streaming video and uses KDE KParts to search for torrent. In short if you are a KDE user KTorrent should be high on your list of BitTorrent client to try. Like Transmission, most Linux distributions that use KDE should have the package of KTorrent installed by default - alternatively you can download the source from the official site.

Installing rTorrent and ruTorrent on Ubuntu 10.04 Server

rTorrent

rTorrent is a BitTorrent client that uses ncurses and the library libtorrent. The advantages of rTorrent are its speed and its simplicity.

LibTorrent is a BitTorrent library written in C++ for *nix, with a focus on high performance and good code. The library differentiates itself from other implementations by transfering directly from file pages to the network stack. On high-bandwidth connections it is able to seed at 3 times the speed of the official client.

Unlike theGUI clients,we can control everything via keyboard shortcuts and we do not need to have a desktop environment running to userTorrent. Now other torrent clients can have a CLI, but rTorrent was designed from the start to use CLI and this is undoubtedly an advantage. This can be really useful if you need some script of your torrenting or if you want to use BitTorrent from the server instead than from your desktop.

Miro 3 - Watch Podcast, Shows, Torrents

Miro

Miro is Mainly a video and music open source player, but integrates a BitTorrent client so you can get movies and music as soon as possible (when available as a torrent) directly from Miro. All that is set as RSS in BitTorrent can simply be downloaded by Miro automatically. Miro is probably not the best solution if you plan to download lots of ISO images, but is perfect for the multimedia.

Miro is easy to use and navigate; on your left you will find all the buttons and access all the functions of the Miro guide – you can search for media files and legal torrents, add or remove video and music files to your library, subscribe to podcasts, etc.

Deluge Torrent client for linux

Deluge

Deluge is a BitTorrent client that can be installed on servers or systems without graphical interface, for Linux, OS X, Unix and Windows.

This BitTorrent client is divided into two main processes: the program to download torrents (the Daemon),and the program that takes care of the graphical interface. The Deluge daemon is able to run on headless machines with the user-interfaces being able to connect remotely from any platform.

The software also supports a rich collection of plugins that extend its functionality, some of the features are:

  • Core/UI split allowing Deluge to run as a daemon
  • Connect remotely to the Deluge daemon
  • Web UI
  • Console UI
  • GTK+ UI
  • BitTorrent Protocol Encryption
  • Mainline DHT
  • Local Peer Discovery (aka LSD)
  • FAST protocol extension
  • µTorrent Peer Exchange
  • UPnP and NAT-PMP
  • Proxy support
  • Web seed
  • Private Torrents

Vuze torrent client

Vuze

Vuze is a Java based BitTorrent client that offers multiple torrent downloads, queuing/priority systems (on torrents and files), start/stop seeding options and instant access to numerous pieces of information about your torrents. It also features an embedded tracker that is easily set up and ready to use.

Vuze it's probably the one with the best graphic and allow search of torrents within the client, but as con it's also the one that use more resource on your system.

Conclusions

As you have read there are many different kind of torrent client available on Linux.

Personally I've used Vuze in the past, but i left it because it was becoming too big and slow, and now I'm using Transmission, a small program that just do 1 thing and do it well.

+1 to Transmission. It is simple and easy to figure out. For some reason, using it in Ubuntu 11.04 kills my wifi, though.

God I wish I knew how to use Ubuntu. I'm so tired of Windows. Do you have any advice on how to learn it?
